About St Michael’s Church, Blundellsands

The St Michael’s Church Family

Things have changed!

Just seven years ago, a visitor walking through our doors on a Sunday morning would have been greeted by a small but faithful congregation of around twenty long-standing members.

Since then, we have worked hard — and prayed hard — to grow into the warm, welcoming, and outward-looking church family we are today. We have embraced the Spiritual, Numerical and Missional principles of Leading Your Church into Growth (LyCIG), and with God’s grace, new life and fresh opportunities have followed.

Our community links are now flourishing. In January 2020, we renewed our partnership with the South Sefton Food Bank, and two years later, in March 2022, we began working alongside the Ukrainian Welcome Centre on Mersey Road.

Meanwhile, our Heavenly Food Club—a collaboration with St Michael’s Church of England School Academy—continues to draw people together around the table, sharing good food and even better company.

Worship remains at the heart of who we are. Our Christingle service raised funds for Save the Children, while our Harvest and Toy Service provided generous gifts for the Salvation Army. Additional events organised by our congregation have supported The Children’s Society and Sefton Women and Children’s Aid (SWACA).

Though we are currently in an interregnum, our Parish leadership is strong and dedicated. Our PCC of twelve members meets faithfully each month, supported by two Church Wardens, two Deanery Synod representatives and two licensed Lay Readers (with another member currently in Lay Ministry training). Together, they ensure that worship, pastoral care, and outreach continue to flourish.

Much of the life of our church is sustained by the hands and hearts of our volunteers. They visit those in need, take communion to the housebound, lead intercessions, read scripture in services, and—perhaps most importantly—extend a heartfelt welcome with good coffee, excellent biscuits and, sometimes, even cake!

Beyond Sundays, you’ll find them tending our award-winning gardens (Level 5 “Outstanding” from the RHS), arranging flowers for our special services and organising regular outings and social events that bring us closer together.

Of course, caring for our historic building is a task that never stands still. In 2021, our church hall was lovingly renovated to a high standard and, more recently, we have completed major repairs to the roof through our Raise the Roof Appeal. Looking ahead, our next challenge is the reparation of the church interior — a true community-wide effort that will be at the heart of our fundraising focus in 2025 and 2026.

Ours is a story of faith, resilience and hope. From a small gathering of twenty, we have become a lively, outward-looking family of faith — rooted in worship, rich in love, and eager to keep growing into all that God has called us to be
