St. Michael’s Blundellsands – Memorial Garden
Description
The Memorial Garden at St. Michael’s Church was dedicated for use as a burial ground for ashes by the Rt Revd Clifford Conder Barker, Suffragan Bishop of York on 27th September 1998.
The Garden serves the whole parish. The ashes of any deceased resident or person with a connection to the parish can be buried here by arrangement with the Churchwardens. An application form is available. The fees involved are set out annually by The Diocese.
The Garden and church grounds are tended by volunteers and contractors as appropriate and will be open and accessible at any time as a place for quiet reflection.
Rules and Regulations
The Memorial Garden is within the grounds of the church and is under the supervision and control of the incumbent and the PCC. They must be consulted by any person(s) interested in having cremated remains interred. No ashes may be introduced by any person(s) without permission.
- An application form must be completed, the relevant charges must be paid and the Crematorium Certificate must be presented in advance of internment
- The incumbent, or other authorised person, will conduct a short service in church, or in the Garden if preferred. The ashes will be interred without any casket or container in the lawn, and the turf replaced.
- No personal markers, vases, memorials, artificial flowers, tributes or objects of any kind are acceptable. Only fresh-cut flowers and wreathes, placed on the lawn at the Interment, Remembrance Day and Christmas, are permitted. An undertaking to comply is included in the application form. Any items introduced which do not comply will be removed. A grid system defines the location of the ashes and it is possible to reserve an adjacent plot or use the same location for later family.
- The names of any deceased person may be entered into the Book of Remembrance if desired and on payment of a fee for calligraphy. The book is displayed in a glass-topped cabinet in the nave.
