Discover the inspiring legacy of the Mothers’ Union.

The Mother’s Union movement began in 1876 when Mary Sumner, the wife of a rector in Hampshire, set up a group to help support mothers. In 1885, she gave a speech to other churchgoing women, which inspired them to go back to their parishes and set up similar supportive groups.

The groups gave voices to disadvantaged women who otherwise would not have been heard. They helped to bring about change in the lives of children. By 1900, there were 169,000 members!

Explore the Legacy and Vision of Mothers’ Union

The Mothers’ Union no exists in 83 countries around the world. Mothers’ Union equips members and their communities to recognise and use the skills, resources and talents around them.  By doing this, individuals and communities feel empowered to take control of their own future, lifting them from a lifetime of dependency.

Continuing from its historic routes, advocating for those without a voice and campaigning for change, remains a focus for the Mothers’ Union. They particularly focus on areas such as education, gender and societal disadvantage.
