About St Michael’s Church, Blundellsands

The St Michael’s Church Family

Things have changed!

Only seven years ago, if you were visiting our church for a morning service, you would have met a small congregation of twenty or so long-standing and faithful members.

We have worked hard to become a warm and welcoming church, to encourage new members and to build on links within our local community.

We continue to follow the Spiritual, Numerical and Missional principles of LyCIG (Leading your Church into Growth).

South Sefton Food Bank links were reintroduced in January 2020. Liaison with our local Ukranian Welcome Centre on Mersey Road began in March 2022 and Sunday Club, ‘Muddles’ reopened in January 2023. Our Heavenly Food Club in collaboration with St Michael’s Church of England High School, continues to reach out to those seeking to meet like-minded people, whilst enjoying a sumptuous luncheon served by our volunteers.

Our Christingle service helped to raise money for the work of Save the Children. Our Harvest and Toy Service saw generous donations of gifts passed to the Salvation Army for distribution and additional events organised by members of our congregation, raised funds for The Children’s Society and Sefton Women and Children’s Aid (SWACA).

We are currently in Interregnum (without a vicar), yet our PCC and Pastoral Team work tirelessly to meet the spiritual needs of the Parish until an appointment is made. Our current leadership includes twelve PCC members who meet monthly, two Church Wardens and three representatives on the Deanery Synod and one Pastoral Team Leader. We have two licensed Lay Readers who are trained to take funerals and one member of the congregation who is about to commence Lay Ministry training.

We have a large number of committed volunteers who visit those who are facing challenges in their personal lives and take communion to the housebound.  Our congregation participate actively, not only in services, leading the intercessions and reading the Bible passages, but in giving a warm welcome and serving good coffee / tea with excellent biscuits, (even cake sometimes!) after the services. Outside of the services they work tirelessly in our award winning garden (awarded Level 5 ‘Outstanding’ by the Royal Horticultural Society); creating lovely flower arrangements to adorn our worship spaces during special services and running a busy schedule with regular organised outings.

Maintaining the fabric of our building also involves a great deal of commitment from our congregation at the moment.  In 2021, the church hall was renovated to a high standard and now we are all involved in our Raise the Roof Appeal Fund. Having just completed the repair work to the church roof, we are now focused on raising additional funds to address the cost of reparation work required to the church interior. This is a real joint effort between the church and local community and will be the primary aim of our fundraising efforts during 2025/26.
